To my beloved listening audience, I present a preview track from the new solo album “Alphabets and Consequences”. This is an outrageous romp on the jazz standard “All the Things You Are”, which is to say, it is a somber meditation on the jazz standard “All the Things You Are”. Most of the album is pretty dark and in that context this piece serves as a bit of comic relief, but I present it to you here decontextualized, like eating dessert in the middle of the night.

The World Demands Another Adam Benjamin Solo Piano Album
And so, I made one. Working with my friends Keven and Robin Brennan at F.Boo Studios in lovely Burbank, CA, and with the assistance of Wes and Paul at Audio Engineering Associates, I recorded a great deal of music last week, the primary theme being “Piano Miniatures” and the secondary theme being “forget about trying to play good and show people the horrible naked truth of who you are”. I think the results are strong! It will be a minute before the giant mound of music is culled, parsed, edited, mixed and mastered, but in the meantime I want to share with you a little taste of unmixed rough track goodness (it’s better for your digestion anyway).
Most of the Miniatures are improvisations, but there are a smattering of Songs as well. This is a short version of the oft-recorded Monk’s Dream. The tertiary (or, rather, third but equal in value) theme of the album is Tributes, and I fancy my version of this tune to be a tribute to the great pianist and superlative Monk interpreter Art Lande, specifically his wonderful record Friday the 13th.

Whoa Dude Check Out This Really Big Sandwich
Thanks to all who came out to see the concerts on the east coast last week, especially to the dedicated few who, sharp pencil in hand, participated fully in my Brooklyn IBEAM Website Launchie Solo Piano Multi-Media Mega-Event. My original word puzzles were Puzzled, prizes were Awarded (ball of twine, asymmetrical potato, etc), jazz standards were Obfuscated, it was a great time for all. Or for me anyway. So, thanks.
Also thanks to Miles Brown, James Donahue, Mike Billingsley, Tony Falco, Ben Monder, Josh Roseman, and all those who made the Kneebody shows happen. Because of you, there was incredibly sweaty New Jersey K-Mart football, and beautiful fall foliage, and quarter notes, and eighth notes. I now know slightly more than I did before. So, thanks.
The next primary strategical target is November 9 in Burbank California. Tri-Annual West Coast Solo Piano Multi-Media Mega-Event 2008. Details forthcoming. Reservations suggested. Audio Recorded.
My next musical offering for you is another from the unreleased solo recordings of yesteryear. It is a long-winded, slow-developing, ambient-tastic 13 minute version of the jazz standard My One And Only Love, performed on a Casio CZ-100 synthesizer, Garageband bass, Fender Rhodes, and Bosendorfer Grand Piano, live at the Roy O. Disney Concert Hall at CalArts in Valencia, California, on October 30, 2006. Listen to it when you have lots of time, or no time at all. Love.
